NEW URBANISM OF SEASIDE

fall 2015, professor eric firley, site-seaside, alys beach, rosemary beach, florida

The documentation of the 80 acre iconically planned town called Seaside, on Florida’s panhandle was a lesson in New Urbanism, the movement initiated by University of Miami Professor Elizabeth Plater Zyberk and Andres Duany. It is designed to be compact and walkable in reaction to the environmentally catastrophic suburban sprawl. Ample use of green infrastructure, and environmentally conscious urban design including pervious pavement, stormwater management, bioretention ponds has been applied. The lessons learned in the neighbouring towns of Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach were also presented and shared with the class.
